Overview

Partnering with the Canadian Women’s Foundation

The Canadian Women’s Foundation is a national leader in the movement for gender equality in Canada. Through funding, research, advocacy, and knowledge sharing, they work to achieve systemic change. The Canadian Women’s Foundation supports women, girls, and gender-diverse people to move out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence and leadership. Since 2021, we embarked on a three-year journey with the Canadian Women’s Foundation to support economic development programs aimed at enhancing employability and increasing possibilities for women to move out of poverty. Six local, grassroots community organizations across Canada were carefully chosen to receive funding to support women and gender-diverse people for careers in skilled trades and technology sectors, equip them with entrepreneurial skills to develop new businesses, and provide counselling,

work experience, and skills coaching to increase their confidence. They were also given additional support that is often overlooked like childcare, safe-housing, transportation and supplies. In 2023, nine new organizations were offered support through this fund. Demand for these programs has increased, especially from women who needed to retrain as the pandemic pushed them out of the labour force. Organizations included Blackfoot Family Lodge Society, building a sustainable future for entrepreneurial minded Indigenous women; Flavours of Hope working with newcomer women through a food business program; or Women’s Multicultural Resource & Counselling Centre of Durham establishing a cooperative for underserved, racialized women to have a safe space to take the lead in their business.

It was my dream to have my own business and with this program I have been able to figure out my way.”
