TOWARDS RECONCILIATION
To further support cultural and language revitalization, we funded the creation of three original Indigenous children’s storybooks.
In 2023, we continued to take actions towards reconciliation with Indigenous communities through our philanthropic activities. During the year, we supported several youth serving organizations across Canada. Organizations like Take a Hike Foundation, Terra Centre, Street Culture Project and Resource Assistance for Youth offer young people, many of whom are Indigenous, more opportunities for education, employment and mental health and wellness. To support access to learning opportunities, CWB funded Chapter One’s high impact tutoring to improve reading proficiency in children. CWB also offered virtual volunteer reading coaches who supported students within classrooms, many of which were in Indigenous communities. Reading coaches provided 198 hours of tutoring through 595 reading sessions. We invested in an Indigenous language reclamation course, Introduction to Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe language) at Red River College Polytech. This provides students with barrier- free access to language education and opportunities to explore cultural and traditional knowledge.
